Saved By The Ball (SBTB) is not an athletic organization, but rather an educational organization, designed to expose student-athletes to the endless career opportunities associated with basketball (sports) if students are prepared to take advantage of the opportunities.
We have provided scholarships to nearly 50 athletes over the past 5 years which included SAT/ACT prep, tutoring, high-level athletic training, mental and physical conditioning, nutrition, ethics, parent/student consultations, and social skills training.
Saved By The Ball Foundation, Inc. (SBTB) was founded in 2006 and funded by Dorian A. Lee also the CEO & Founder of B'BALL 101 Elite Basketball Training. SBTB is a lifelong dream of Dorian's and is founded on the premise that learning to play basketball is simply not enough. We must teach kids how to play and excel at the game of life.
Throughout Dorian's successful basketball career, Dorian noticed that many athletes succumbed to various obstacles in their pursuit of their dream of playing basketball. There were academic casualties, standardized test score casualties, social/interpersonal skill casualties, post-playing career casualties, poor family structure casualties and, of course, lack of highly developed basketball skill casualties.
SBTB has and will always provide student-athletes (both male and female ages 14-19), the ancillary resources needed to be successful as students first and then as athletes. We deliver a “complete” player that is grounded, prepared, and confident – both on and off the basketball court.
SBTB is a safe haven for the players, creating a healthy lifestyle mindset of activity while simultaneously reducing the chances of substance abuse, obesity, pregnancy, or delinquency. Participants are transformed into future mentors and leaders, becoming touchable and accessible role models in society.
For nearly a decade B'Ball 101 has been successfully developing the minds and bodies of basketball players at all levels. As Atlanta's premier choice in basketball player development & training, B'Ball 101's unique training system continues to help every athlete reach their career goals. The student-athletes who come through our system continually earn athletic scholarships to colleges and universities and our professional athletes look to us for the tools that will give their career longevity, and increase their demand and overall value in the market.

Tutorial Services
During 2010- 2011 school year we serviced approximately 150 students and have seen effective and positive academic improvements based on parental feedback of students, pre and post- test results, and LEA test data.
Our curriculum is based on several key elements; complete diagnostic assessment, individualized learning plan, research proven materials, benchmark test, and post diagnostic assessment. Data from pre diagnostic provides the functioning grade level, strengths, and weaknesses of each student. Post diagnostic test provides growth data on each student and have revealed a positive impact on academic achievement of the low achieving students that were served.
PEM stakeholders’ completed a survey on our effectiveness and overall satisfaction of tutorial services provided. Parents reported that test testing strategies enabled their child to overcome testing anxiety and consequently scoring higher on the CRCT and GHSGT. 99% of parents surveyed stated that they would choose PEM again as a tutorial provider for their child.
Anecdote evidence is received from parents on how their students' grades, attendance, class participation, and discipline have improved as a result of attending PEM after school program. Parents provided the program director data of current grades, attendance record, standardize test scores, and discipline records from each child that participated in PEM after school program to track student’s progress. Data revealed a substantial gain in the performance level of students that participated in Project Educate Me after school program in both reading and math. Students that attended tutorial sessions for a minimum of three hours a week increased an average of 2.02 GE (grade equivalent) in Reading comprehension scores and 2.00 in Vocabulary scores and 73% of students made gains in Mathematics. The results presented are based on students’ who completed 32 session hours of instruction with Project Educate Me after school program.
The instructional component of the tutorial program is researched based and proven to be an effective key element in increasing student academic achievement. PEM differentiate instruction and presents instructional content in multiple formats that have proven to be effective practices for at-risk students. A variety of instructional materials are used to accommodate various learning styles. Curriculum used will address student’s individual needs based on identified gaps in knowledge as indicated through testing data on each student.
Method Test Prep specializes in standardized test preparation and has been preparing students to excel on the SAT for over 12 years. Due to our success and commitment to serving our students, we have grown rapidly.

Big Apple vs. Big Peach: Life lessons learned

Khadeen Carrington, a sophomore shooting guard at Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) escaped the littered streets of New York City for a bit of Southern Hospitality in Atlanta, Ga. this Thanksgiving weekend for the Big Apple vs. Big Peach Battle. The holiday tournament showcased some of the top high school teams from New York and Georgia alongside providing off-court life lessons for the participants.
“I’m from Brooklyn, so there is a lot of stuff going on, like shootings and gangs,” Carrington said. “Every day you hear about someone dying. It’s nice to come down here and take a break from all of that.”
Dorian Lee and Robert “Bobby” Parker Jr., who saw life beyond their small town hoop dreams in Mobile, Ala., established the inaugural Big Apple vs. Big Peach Battle. They played basketball together at Spring Hill College in Mobile and found ways to stay involved in the game after their playing days. Lee and Parker created the Save the Ball Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps guide young adults through the labyrinth of being a student-athlete.

The idea of the Big Apple/Big Peach Battle came from B'Ball 101 creators Dorian Lee and Bobby Parks who had a vision of pitting talented teams against each other from the New York City area and the state of Georgia. In addition to the on court action, the day before Turkey Day the Big Apple/Big Peach staff held some life lesson sessions for the players. The series of workshops included collegiate eligibility center registration, a financial literacy seminar, and key note messages from former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward and WNBA player Chamique Holdsclaw.
As far as what happened on the floor, both states took the floor with similar styles. All teams looked to play with an uptempo style and with this being the early part of the high school basketball season spectators were subjected to some sloppy play, but non the less most of the games went down to the wire. At the events end the teams from NYC and Georgia finished the weekend with identical 3-3 records with Lovejoy HS(GA) and South Shore HS(NY) being the big winners by winning both of their games.
